you are right that it will repeat, so just keep the dimensions proportionate (image size for bg.png is 20x980px) -- you might try, as suggested, to zoom in so that you can visibly see where the colours change and insert guides so that when you overlay different colours you can be as precise as possible (to make sure that the nav bar / top header etc lineup)
note: once you change the background you are also going to need to update the logo etc - but you can always take your newly created bg file and stretch it horizontally via photoshop to create the size req'd for the logo file etc
note: i have asked Brian for the PSD (photoshop files) and he has suggested they will be available shortly (this will help with things as it is somewhat more cumbersome to accurately match gradient backgrounds / navbar drop shadows etc) however, anything is possible if you open up the images folder and start to experiment
i have found that creating a few files (bg1, bg2, bg3 etc) and then testing via firefox's firebug to be a nice way to get an idea of what you might like when you are not quite sure
