Big problems after moving WP to another directory

In researching some more in the Codex, I followed a tip that was in the Codex regarding the deprecated tag get_settings...

The tip said to go to http://www. your domain .net/wp-admin/options.php

So I did that and found a field for "home". The value was blank, so I put in "/" and the site links for the Home link started working again.

I've no idea if what I did was the "fix" or a workaround or what, but I sure would like some validation from someone that this indeed is what needed to be done and if not, what I should be doing to fix the problem
