As for the plugin, well .. it almost looks like too much work. I realized overnight that for all intent and purposes, even if my archives are missing images or do not have large sized images .. this featured content is all about the current stuff (or latest 5 posts) and I should be able to work pro-actively around that issue to consciously include an image every time.
