Hi Laura,
Cool! Actually, query_posts is a nice way of altering the query when used with a standard loop. Basically, you can add all the usual parameters you would use with wp_query, which makes it very powerful. A word of warning - it only works well with a standard loop, not with secondary loops created with wp_query. :)
