When you look at your WordPress Dashboard in the "Right Now" section what number does it list for number of categories? If the number is 0 then the database table may have crashed. This can be fixed from phpmyadmin or a similar tool provided by your web host. There are also a few database management plugins that will allow you to repair database tables from within WordPress.
