Yes, it will work well for all the common HTML elements that normally appear in posts: paragraphs, headings, blockquote, etc.

However, it will be difficult to avoid using additional markup in the post editor for some things. For example, on my personal site, I highlight certain blocks of text as "tips". These are generated by manually inserting div class="tip" markup in the post editor. In this case, the post author needs to know how to do this - which may be tricky with non-techie authors. A possible solution is to develop shortcodes to provide special formatting like this. There may even be suitable plugins on wordpress.org/extend which can provide this functionality.

Not sure what you mean by messy. You mean messy layout of the post markup in the page source? It doesn't bother me.
