Phil, from a client perspective; I run lots and lots of sites with Genesis Child themes, I have never had a conflict with a plugin and have never had any problems with Wordpress updates.
I use Dynamic Content Gallery on all my Genesis sites for home page sliders and Next Gen Gallery for galleries - never had any problem with either of them. They have always worked perfectly.
