Default Simple question about installing genesis.1.8.0.zip

Hi everyone. It's a Genesis/workpress newbie here.

I have purchased the child theme and the genesis platform. I'm in the process of installing the genesis theme. After installing, do I activate it? or do I just then install the child theme and only activate the child theme?

Thank you so very much for the help. I have not been able to find the answer to this question, but it's probably right under my nose.

Install genesis, install the child theme, then activate the child theme.

If you activate genesis, it will change when you activate the child theme. There's no magic that happens behind the scenes - genesis just has to be there in the theme folder.

Hi Andrea, Thank you so very much for the very quick reply!! OK. Got it.

I got everything installed and I'm now trying to install or rather import the Demo Site content but again, just following the basic instructions in How to Import the Demo Site Content page doesn't seem to work for me. Can you help from here or should I make a new thread?

OK. Thanks. I appreciate you and the time you take to answer. I'll try to be as clear as I can.

I followed the instructions given in the article entitled "How to Import the Demo Site Content". After the importing of the Demo Site Content I got these errors:

Import WordPress
Failed to import Media “sample”
Failed to import Media “sample-2”
Failed to import Media “header.png”
Failed to import Media “featured-1”
Failed to import Media “featured-2”
Failed to import Media “featured-3”
Failed to import Media “profile”
Failed to import Media “header1.png”

Everything else imported just fine.

I want to start off with the blog looking just like the Demo and then I'll make changes from there.

My site is www.power-of-us.com

I think it might have something to do with my setting up the Child Theme properly. I understand that I have to "Set the Genesis Options: Genesis > Theme Settings" but I don't know where to find info about what I need to set.

I also don't know what to set for "Set the Child theme Settings: Genesis > {child name} Settings (Note, not all child themes have their own settings page)."

Also, the example photos didn't show up from the Demo.

Let me know if you need more information.

Here's the link for Review the Genesis Tutorials:

http://www.studiopress.com/support/s...ad.php?t=19576

But I don't see any tutorials on this page. I'm sure they are there, but I just don't see them.

The pictures didn't import because of folder permissions on your uploads folder.

How would I change the permissions on the upload folders.

Also, how can I get the failed imports to import?

Quote:
Import WordPress
Failed to import Media “sample”
Failed to import Media “sample-2”
Failed to import Media “header.png”
Failed to import Media “featured-1”
Failed to import Media “featured-2”
Failed to import Media “featured-3”
Failed to import Media “profile”
Failed to import Media “header1.png”
I also notice that the site has a different feel to it. Could that have something to do with a css file? Maybe it's not there or it's in the wrong folder or something? I'm just guessing here. :)

Import the file again. it will skip already imported posts.

OK. Thank you for the help. I truly appreciate it.

I'll try to get the permissions thing fixed with Site5.

But the css looks different or seems different to me.

OK. I tried changing permissions on the wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes folders but still get the same error. I changed the permissions to 755.

What other permissions can I change? or try?

You;ve selected the Green color scheme for the theme.

Tell your host that media imports will not import and they can check folders for you.

Site5 hosting specialist checked and said there is no reason that the media files should not upload or import. Hummmm.

I'm sorry for all this, but I really need to get the site up just like the demo to show to the board of the company. Thank you for the help.

Look in the uploads folder. Are there subfolders for year/month?

Also - the importer is core WP, and the xml file we give was generated by WP itself. Sometimes it just has issues, regardless of theme.

There is a data error in the uploads folder. There are no folders or data, just a data error message. I guess it could be the original file you give us. If that's the case, is there another way to set the blog up just like the demo? What can I do about this?

And...

You are being so good to me, I want to take you out for a coconut water the next time you are in Rio!! OK? I really do appreciate the help.

What does the data error message show?

Usually, if you make the folders, WP will then be able to put the images in there.

(I am in snowy Canada, Rio sounds good about now...)

When I'm in file manager, and I go the upload folder and click on it. Inside the folder it only says "data error". Yep, it's warm here. We love it.

Inside that folder, make a new folder called 2012 and one called 2011.

Oops. Nope. It didn't work. The permissions are set to 755. Does that sound right?

Do you have, or can you get another copy of the .xml file? Or is there another way to get one that works?

Here's the results of the import:

Import WordPress
Failed to import Media “sample”
Failed to import Media “sample-2”
Failed to import Media “header.png”
Failed to import Media “featured-1”
Failed to import Media “featured-2”
Failed to import Media “featured-3”
Failed to import Media “profile”
Failed to import Media “header1.png”
Page “Sample Page” already exists.
Page “Sub Page 1.1” already exists.
Page “Sub Page 1.2” already exists.

Am I correct in assuming that the folder should be named "uploads"? If so, I've done that with the two folders inside that one.

It;s not the import file. It works for me.

THe folder can also have the wrong *user*, and that is something your host can help with. WP needs to be able to grab the images from our site and copy them over to *your* site. If it does not have permission, then it will fail.

A new import file will not fix what is on your server.

You can still set up the site even without the actual images.

You can even try a sample xml file from another theme and you will get the same thing.

OK. I'll keep trying. I actually tried several things and ended up blowing up the server and got a terrible Internal Server Error so now my Site5 Hosting is having to call the firemen in and then they will let me know what is left tomorrow. I'm going to go to bed and let them settle the matter.

I do thank you for all your help and appreciate your taking the time with me.

I was under the impression that I could purchase the theme and start with the working demo blog. I am way behind schedule now and I may miss the opportunity if I can't get my demo up. I know I can change the demo, but I'm not sure how to set everything up from scratch. I'm just messing things up on the site right now.

Hi there. Well, I've been working all day on this. I had the support team delete everything and I started all over again with a clear start. I reinstalled WP and then the Genesis zip file via the Themes Install. Then I installed the Child theme Streamline. Then I used the Import function to import the .xml file found in the Streamline theme. The permissions in the uploads folder are set to 755.

Here's the message after importing:

Failed to import Media “sample”
Failed to import Media “sample-2”
Failed to import Media “header.png”
Failed to import Media “featured-1”
Failed to import Media “featured-2”
Failed to import Media “featured-3”
Failed to import Media “profile”
Failed to import Media “header1.png”
Page “Sample Page” already exists.
Page “Sub Page 1.1” already exists

I did not set any menus up or widgets. But that shouldn't have any effect on the fact that the Media failed to import.

I really need some help. It seems from what I have read, I should be able to set the b log up, just like it is in the Demo and then work backwards.

Hoping you can help.

This is the reply I got from Site5 support. Site5 is my hosting service.

Quote:
The permissions on the uploads folder shouldn't affect this, if it is 755, because we do use suphp, it is essentially the same this as 777 because it is being written and read by the owner that owns it. Can you please ask if the script can be used on a suphp environment? There are scripts that actually check if "chmod" is 777 and if it isn't, it will throw errors, unfortunately, I am not familiar with this particular script, it would be best if you contact the developer to see if it is compatible with a suphp environment. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

I also use Site5. :)

Did you tell them all your were doing was import a an XML import from from a wordpress install into a new WP install?

There is nothing different to special or custom about the demo xml files we provide.

Yes, I explained everything I am doing and exactly what it is for.

OK. So now we know it's not a problem with the permissions or the suphp.

Where do we go from here? I would like, or rather need, to set the site up right away. I thought that purchasing the theme would allow me to modify the theme to my needs, but without being able to import the .xml file completely, I have to actually set everything up myself.

This is not what I was expecting. There must be a solution to this problem. If it's not the .xml file and it's not Site5, then what other possibilities are there?

Thank you so much for your time. I do appreciate the help.

As a test, I got another domain name yesterday. Waited till today. Installed WP and then installed Genesis and then Streamline. And then imported the demo .xml file and got the same errors I got using the power-of-us.com domain.

I'm not sure what else to do now.

Getting another domain name will not change anything though, especially since it points to the same exact web host.

Please PM me a login to the original site.

I se the uploads folders for images were created:

http://therainforestlegacy.com/wp-co...loads/2012/03/

It;s possible the wordpress importer itself has an issue. The demo file is just done with WP and the import is core WP as well - nothing we wrote specifically.

Thanks for the help. But what does that mean for me? I'm not sure I understand what that all means.

Also, I just purchased the Balanced theme. Where do I go to find the tutorials for it?

Andrea, I found the theme tutorials I was looking for and the installation of the xml file worked just fine. I am now using the Balance theme. I don't know what the problem was with the Streamline theme xml importer, but Balance works just fine.

Thank you for all the help. I'm sure I'll see you in the Balance threads later as I have more questions specifically about that Theme.

Thank you again and I appreciate all the help and attention you have given me here.
