In WordPress 2.7 comments got more complicated because they could be nested. This tutorial was written for comments which do not nest. Lifestyle is WordPress version 2.7 compatible and uses the more complicated to customize wp_list_comments() function.

In the comments to this tutorial, the author of this tutorial says pretty much the same thing and points you to this post which illustrates the use of a call back function to customize comments.

It's always a good idea to read the comments to a post as well as the post.
