I feared this was general IE version 8 behavior that might make it into the final version on Win7, not just the beta.

I managed today to take a look at IE 8 on XP on a friend's computer (i.e. not beta) -- there it looks OK. Hence, this might have been indeed just "IE 8 on Win7 Beta" behavior

With this my issue is solved. Apologies for any inconveniences caused.
