It being Sunday and me not being a support tech:
What sort of buggy behavior do you experience?
What is your URL?
Why would you choose to FTP the unzipped file rather than using Wordpress (seems like extra work to get results that don't work for you)?
You are puttting the child folder in wp-themes folder and not genesis folder, right?
I wonder about your permissions settings.
