The truth is, I am a doofus. I had changed permalinks to custom because I thought that was the way to get page urls to show cleanly (/about, /contact, /blog for example instead of /pageid-1). Realised that selecting 'day and name' permalink option has made it work so page urls are correct, and blog urls all work now. Thanks for the help!
