The WordPress Media Library uses the dimensions when setting the name. Your thumbnails would end with -120x80.jpg (filename-120x80.jpg). Some people find it convenient not to place the dimensions in there and always use a -thumbnail.jpg (filename-thumbnail.jpg) or -thumb.jpg (filename-thumb.jpg).


I find adding the dimensions into the file name is easier because I can specify exact dimensions in my <img> tag, but I tend to use exactly scaled images of different sizes for thumbs. (I may be a bit anal. I'm a work in progress.)
