auto update?

This is possibly a really dumb question.

I'm running Driskill and understood there would be an option in the updates portion of the dashboard to update to the new version of Genesis. Does it only work if the genesis theme is active?

As I'm running Driskill with genesis 1.8 in the theme directory do I not need to worry about the update?
