I think Wordpress can make an excellent CMS, although sometimes its "blogging" roots need a little lateral thinking to get around. But you are correct, it is highly customisable, and it is able to deliver 99.99% of what most people want in a CMS. Of course Drupal has its fans too, but in terms of learning curve Wordpress is, IMO, easier. Just my two centimes worth... :)
