Ok. I see what I did wrong. It was in my page when creating a custom field. I put my query_args as the literal variable "query_args" instead of "cat". And then the value is the category as a number rather than "cat=1". I guess I could parse it this way, but why would I. Anyway, dumb mistake on my part.
