Trying to use a pre-existing subdirectory install

I’m trying to redirect my wordpress website from http://groundfishforum.org/GFFWordPress/wordpress to http://groundfishforum.org. I changed my Site Address (url) settings in the General Settings from http://groundfishforum.org/GFFWordPress/wordpress to http://groundfishforum.org (left the WordPress address (url) as is). I copied my .htaccess and index.php file from my GFFWordPress/wordpress directory to /groundfishforum.org/public/, my root directory and then changed the require('./wp-blog-header.php'); in the index.php file that I moved into my root directory to require('./GFFWordPress/wordpress/wp-blog-header.php'); but I’m still getting the old website when I access http://www.groundfishforum.org. I have searched high and low for a remedy but haven’t found it. My permalinks are set to custom structure (/%postname%) so I didn't change anything there. I appreciate any and all help with this. Until then, will be doing this .

looks like you may have an index.html file. You need to move/rename/remove that file.

I had no doubt you'd know the answer and shame on me for spending so much time searching and not posing my question sooner. It does frustrate me tho that in all the documentation that I searched through, I ran across only one bit of documentation that mentioned the index.html file but it didn't pertain to my particular situation so I didn't know it needed to be removed or changed. And all the documentation on this that gave the same instructions over and over, never once mentioned that file as a troubleshooting issue if the change didn't take.
