Many thanks for your help.

I deleted the whole blog and am having another go, as the whole blog had completely 'crashed' and nothing was working anywhere. I had installed Jeff Johnson's seo plugin for the first time (that everyone has probably heard about the last few days!) and maybe that was not compatible with other plugins or the theme or something.
