Thank you, Charles! Your very succinct responses were all I needed. It turns out the Subscribe to Comments plugin created a "subscribe" ID on the page just above the Feedburner subscription section. I didn't realize that's what was happening, though, until your comment.
I deleted the 'target="popupwindow" portion and added the <div> tags, as you directed. And voila! my site finally validates! Thank you SO much for your time and help! All the best, Deb
