header.php & header_home.php

can someone quickly explain how these two work? (the only other theme i used had a single header file) -- noticed that when customizing one needs to change both where applicable & am curious as to the rationale behind it

i am going to try to insert a 'topper' (shallow mastehead banner ad) across the top and just want to make sure i place it in the right spot -- note: it is a flash banner if that changes anything
