plugins installed via ftp don't show up -

my plugins won't show up when i install them via ftp and then i have one account
that won't let me install from the dashboard because it wants ftp info and it keeps telling me there
is an error

so I was trying to install via ftp (this happens on other accounts that don't need ftp verification too)

has anyone else experienced this or do you know what i'm doing wrong
