thumbnails and stuff

Ok I may just be having a bad day, but I cannot find any instructions on thumbnails for the education theme. I tried butting in the usual fields- articleimg, thumbnail, etc. to no avail, and then I tried "thumb" and got a broken image placeholder to appear, but no actual image.

Am I missing instructions somewhere? If I am missing this there may be other areas I am missing documentation on as well. The only thing under theme settings is the SIZE of the thumb. Maybe the thumb has to be the exact same size?
