Category view - thumbs and excerpt

Is it possible to display posts in the category pages as per the home page bottom bit?

I have read this post: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5466 but it is not really what I want and, looking at the homepagebottom section in the home.php I can't make out if I can copy any of that to display it in the archive.php

Perhaps my title is a bit misleading as I would rather use the first so many characters, as the homepage does.

I did try using the more tag, but when I have a picture in the post it displays that full size, which I don't want.
