NEWS child theme help please

I am trying to add things to the home page using the widgets. However, when I add things to the widgets they do not show up on the home page, but I can get the widgets to show up in the side bar. Is there something I need to do have the home page look like the example?

(Sorry for putting this here instead of the child theme forum, the code I received to access that support does not work :
