Creating New Widget Locations

Hello,

I couldn't find any other post, but if there is one already answered please point me to it.

Here is my site:

In the left column (home.php), I would like to replace the Featured Category listings (with thumbnails) with three widgeted sections. 2 of the sections will be recent category posts and the 3rd I want to move the Photo Gallery to.

Can anyone tell me how to do this or point me to a tutorial please?
