MAMP - Offline WP construction questions

Does anyone here use MAMP (Mac) or XAMP (PC)?

I'm having some challenges with the SQL/Database part of this. Working offline ROCKS! from a beginners perspective. What does NOT rock is the database errors when uploading, not to mention Wordpress not connecting online to the DB to start with.
The question is:
Is there somewhere where I can go learn the step-by-step process for uploading a Wordpress site after building it offline?
