How to change shade of <hr> line

With grateful thanks for the advice previously received, how would I go about making the colour/shade of a page division, generated by having added a <hr> instruction on our static front page slightly less prominent? I suppose you would say more grey rather than black. If I was able to do this would it affect anything else elsewhere?
