Default page navigation not showing

I must be doing something wrong with multi-page articles (I know, I know, it's shocking...)

The page at http://www.pogowasright.org/?page_id=26 was too long, so I inserted breaks. What you're seeing now is correct up to the first break, but I don't see any navigation at the bottom of the first page to get to the second page... or third.

I edited archive.php, index.php, and page.php to read:
Code:
<?php the_content(__('Read more'));?><div style="clear:both;"></div>
<?php wp_link_pages(); ?>
No joy.

I also tried a few plug-ins, but either they don't work for 2.7.1 or I don't know how to get them working after activating them.

I think I need baby steps instructions to get the page navigation working. Help, please?
