No message when site search yields no results

I'm setting up a search results page for a client, but when I test it for a search term that yields no results, I get no message. Here's my code (which I haven't touched except to change the wording of the message)

<?php _e('Sorry, nothing matched your search criteria.'); ?></p><?php endif; ?>
		

<?php posts_nav_link(' — ', __('&laquo; Previous Page'), __('Next Page &raquo;')); ?></p>

Can anyone help with this?
