Dumb question: will Buddypress work with Genesis

I have a build a Buddypress site for a client and have never done it before. Seems simple enough, but I have a few questions.

Do I have to use BP in conjunction with WPMU which I am totally unfamiliar with? Or, does Wp 3.32 now have the WPMU capability built in?

I love building all my sites with Genesis and child themes. I've been searching around for answers about WPMU and BP, but can't seem to get any clarification.

Hopefully this is a simple answer from some of the smart folks around here.
