thumbnail issue

I know this is a repetitive post, but the answers aren't helping meeee

I can't get a thumbnail to show. Is there anyone that can walk me thru in dummy terms how to get a thumbnail to show?

I have photos uploaded and embedded in my post. I'd like a thumbnail version of the same image to show on the featured post on the home page. I did set a custom field in the post of "thumbnail" that has a value set to the url that DOES lead to the photo. I'm just getting the ALT info showing.

I'm sorry this is repetitive, I just didn't understand any of the previous solutions. Thanks!!
