PDF Downloads

I'm looking for the best way to create a portfolio (so to speak) of thumbnails that when clicked on would download a pdf.

Is there a child theme that would work well with this or a plugin that does this?

I know I could just add thumbnails to a page and link them to the pdf in the media library, but I'm wondering if there is a better way to offer pdf downloads in a gallery format.
