Upgrading to Genesis

I currently run a site using the Magazine theme which I have modified slightly. If I upgrade to the Genesis framework and magazine child theme, how easy is it to transfer my edits? Will I have to find and make every edit again?

I am assuming that I will be able to switch between the legacy theme and the new Genesis theme at will until I get the new theme to look right.
