Captions showing as text in featured boxes

When I use a photo with a caption at the top of a post, that caption becomes part of the text that is displayed on the home page, in the featured content boxes (as in, to the right of the thumb).

The caption appears as the first words in that box, as if it were part of the story -- regardless of whether the photo is positioned left or right on the post.

As in:

Mary Jones The new mayor of Blahtown

when it should start

The new mayor of Blahtown

How do I make that not happen?
