Buddypress?

Forgive my ignorance but I have a client who wants to have pages on their site accessible by login only and some not. I found this great plugin that sounds perfect but it's for a buddypress site? I don't know what buddypress is, if it can be used with Genesis, which I would hate to not use because frankly I think it's the best thing around. Anyone? So can I use buddypress with Genesis?
