Merging Footers, Three columns to one column widget

Many of the Genesis Themes have 3 column footer widgets out of the box. Often I am asked to create just the one widget in the footer (a full-width footer) for a slideshow of clients logos or something similar. I'm just wondering how this is achieved? Thanks so much. Robin
