How do you choose which theme to use?

I am new here, and I am wondering how you guys choose what theme to use? Many look pretty similar, but when I Iook at the showcase, a lot of the sites don't look anything like the original child theme. So are there certain criteria you look for? Do you just pick a theme you like and keep using it?
