Blog post on home page

I am encountering an issue that I'd like to fix on the themes that I use. One of the sites I am using is www.thescenezine.com (using Church). I want to be able to include the most recent blog post in full right under the Featured Content Gallery, then use the standard category snippets under the post. Is this easily done?

Also, how on Earth do I add the thumbnails for each story so they show up? Are they a field in the post?

Thanks for your help, I love the themes, but they sometimes are more difficult to tweak that I can handle. Hopefully this is all a quick fix.
