Learning PHP to further take advantage of WP and Genesis

Any recommendations on where to go to get a firm grip on PHP in order to take full advantage of WordPress' and Genesis' flexibility. I'd like to have the ability to fulfill any request and to be able to edit files such as functions.php and home.php. I was looking at these, but wanted to see if there was anything more suitable for my application:
