Default Are Responsive themes really the way to go?

I am looking to build a site that is laid out like this one for the home page (mostly):

http://tinyurl.com/8pxggpv

And looking at doing it from one of the Responsive themes... either Education or even Agency...

But I have some concerns when looking at the forums for those 2 themes and wondering if the Responsive version of the theme is overall working good for others.

Feedback please... else I could always select a non-responsive theme but then worried about using an out-dated method.

Thanks!
CK
