Adding Ad Code To Child Theme

Hi folks, I'm implementing ads from the Guardian newspaper's network at the moment, and they've instructed me to add pieces of code to both the footer and to the top of the template in my blog.

The problem is I don't know where to start - can anyone advise which files in the editor I should be altering/adding?

I can share snippets of the code if that helps...
