I need your feedback on my rather dull looking website please!

Please help me with ideas to make my rather dull looking blog a bit a bit better. I can't quite put my finger but it looks a bit more basic than I would like, the website is geared towards moms who want to blog. I certainly don't want it to display as a magazine layout so I am wondering if you guys can make any suggestions to make it look a bit more interesting to the eye.

I am not even sure if its the colours or what. If you think its colours, what colours would you suggest I use. The sidebar doesn't look very well organised either. The blog uses the lifestyle theme.

I was thinking of getting a header done, but I don't think that alone would make a difference or would it?. Ideas Please. Thanks
