How to add the post count to categories

As it is right now, the Categories in the sidebar does not indicate the number of posts in each category.

When you use a sidebar widget to add categories to the sidebar, there is an option to include the post count next to the Category name... ie: Blog (48)

But I don't want to use a widget to add Categories because the template already has Categories hard-wired. So the question is, what code do I need to add to the existing code to enable the post count?

I've tried looking this up on the WP codex and was messing around with

p_count_posts()

but it wasn't working.
