Do I need FeedBurner?

Do I need FeedBurner?

When trying to subscribe (right hand sidebar, bottom), I get the following error message: "The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled."

Reading previous threads I find that in the enews widget, I need to fill in your feedburner ID.

However, this is a university server which has not enabled FeedBurner.

"FeedBurner has not been enabled by the administrator of the domain @hawaii.edu."

How can I work around this?
