Default Simple Hook and Firebug questions

Greetings:

Genesis and prose subscriber.

I have been able to make color changes through the Genesis Design Settings. Still missing out on code change procedures though. After reading the great post from MonkeyCoder (The Separation of Genesis & Child Themes) from earlier today it raised two questions.

Are the "Simple" things such as hooks the place to make code changes? Thought I would not have to do much coding but this seems to indicate not.

Is FireBug something I should have to help me out here? And, should I be using Firefox to create my site (rather than Safari)?

Thank you.
