Creating a Directory Site

I'm trying to create a directory site with Wordpress and Studiopress. I've bought the best directory plugin out there (http://directorypress.net/), but don't like it.

Is there some tutorial/site you would recommend checking out?

I want people to be able to list their business (paid and non-paid listings) easily and have users be able to search those listings easily.
