Dumb Enews and Updates question

I've looked for info about this in the support forums, and on the pages talking about my theme (Streamline 30), but I can't find any direct answer to my dumb question. :?

Which is: what is the actual functionality of the "Enews & Updates" box?

Is it simply a snazzy way of allowing people to sign up for my Feedburner feed, or is it something different? It almost seems like it would be signing up for a newsletter of some kind...but then again there's no real mention of what happens after someone inputs/sends their email address.
