Separate field for featured content boxes

It would be great to be able to have one headline for the post and another for the featured content boxes on the home pages (the ones with the thumbnails). Say an override custom field. Or did I miss this lesson? I often write short headlines in order to accommodate the HP display, but the posts look funny.
