Default How to customise a theme

Hi,

After purchasing the Genesis framework and a child theme, I would like to customise this theme a little bit by modifying functions.php and style.css.

However, I would like to make these modifications update safe so they get not lost when a child theme update is released.

Should I just modify the child theme (not update safe) or is there a better solution (creating a child theme from a child theme) ?

Best regards,
Romain
