Replacing Background Color with an Image

I'm just wanting to find out how to replace the default background color on the sides of each page with an image. I guess I really have 2 questions.

1.) Where do I go in the code to replace the color with an image?
2.) What size does the image need to be?

I'm essentially wanting to replace the grey background with the image of a weathered wood exterior.
